How to successfully deal with recess for a child who's overwhelmed by it
I know a child who has found recess in the elementary schools difficult. The large number of students and lack of structured activity makes it overwhelming. Does anyone have any ideas how to address this issue with the school or with her child? Are there success stories out there?

My son has had a very hard time with recess this year. We have met with the school several times and their suggestion to us was to keep him inside for one of the two daily recesses and allow him outside for other. We are trying this approach currently but do have some concerns as to how his skipping one recess may be affect him socially. For the one recess he does participate in outside, we have spoken with the PT folks at his school and together have developed a list of items he is allowed to borrow from their room to use at recess. This has helped in that he now has balls, jump ropes, and other fun things to play at recess and often times what he brings outside is something of interest to some of the other kids. We have also encouraged our son, who loves to play organized games, to coordinate games of four square. He loves this and again this type of activity has helped to ease some of the stresses and anxiety he feels about recess. I would love to hear some other stories about recess... what has worked; what has not!
