Keeping ASD children focused at school
My son is in Kindergarten and has trouble staying focused. Due to large class size and having to go to different rooms for classes, he's getting so overwhelmed. Have you tried anything with your autism spectrum child that has helped him/her to stay focused? Thanks! Liz

Discussion

Has he been found eligible for special education? If so does he have an IEP? Many school districts have inclusive and substantial separate classrooms for children on the spectrum. It's not up to the parent to figure out what will work best for their child when they are not in an appropriate program receiving appropriate services. Without knowing more about your child, if he has been dx with ASD he should have an IEP, with perhaps an aide, smaller class etc. The school is not providing him with Free Appropriate Education (FAPE)
Yes, he has a diagnosis and is on an IEP. This public school is very lax though. They don't seem to know what the heck they are doing. He's in an inclusive classroom (mainstreamed but special needs kids are 'allowed'.)
Have you thought of calling the team together to discuss these problems (or you might have done so already). I would still request a meeting. Be relentless.
