Von Drehle points to well-documented statistics on summer learning loss and notes that "summer is among the most pernicious - if least acknowledged - causes of achievement gaps in America's schools."
He explains that children of low-income families suffer the most and that American children as a whole lose out to children around the globe who may be spending four weeks longer in school each year.
