Getting Rid of Bad Teachers

The opinion section of The New York Times carries reaction to a hotly debated item in the news - the slow progress of New York City officials in getting rid of teachers who have been judged incompetent.

Weighing in on the subject are Steve Perry, principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, CT; Timothy Daly, president of the New Teacher Project; Richard D. Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation; and many others.

Much of the discussion centers around making evaluations more effective. Among the suggestions are peer reviews. What all seem to agree on is the urgent need to put a new evaluation process in place.
