Following an earlier piece in The New York Times on how to get a proper diagnosis if you suspect your child has a learning disability, Walecia Konrad has written this article in The New York Times on how to make sure your child is getting the necessary help.
Among the pieces of advice is knowing your rights as a parent and that means understanding The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, commonly referred to as IDEA.
Included in those rights are the right to ask for an evaluation or re-evaluation of a child at any time. Most important, says Konrad, is the parents' right to be part of the team that decides the services and therapies the child will receive.
