Are you thinking about using the Orton-Gillingham approach to help your struggling reader?

Orton-Gillingham is an instructive methodology sometimes used with children with reading disabilities, particularly with what is commonly called "dyslexia".

The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practictioners and Educators describes the Orton-Gillingham approach in the following way:

Lexia: A Specialist Educator Explains

The Lexia software program was initiated by a man named Bob Lemire in 1984 after discovering that his son had been diagnosed with dyslexia. Lexia is a comprehensive program to enhance reading skills. It is often used to supplement instruction and help increase proficiency in reading. Students are able to practice decoding, spelling, comprehension, and vocabulary while enhancing their keyboarding skills.

Wilson Reading System: A Specialist Educator Explains

Wilson is a reading and writing program designed for students who have decoding and spelling difficulties. It is a research-based curriculum involving 12 steps recommended for grades two and up. This program was originally developed for adults who had dyslexia. There are two different levels to this program. Level A is designed for students in Elementary grade levels and ESL students. Level B is designed for students in Middle/High School grade levels.

Orton-Gillingham Approach: A Specialist Educator Explains

Orton-Gillingham is designed for students who have difficulties processing language as well as developing basic reading skills. It is an explicit approach to teaching reading, spelling, and handwriting. This approach is diagnostic, multisensory, sequential, and extremely structured. Language is introduced systematically, focusing on skills that are concrete which later progress to abstract. Lessons begin with sound and corresponding letter identification and move on to multi-syllabic word reading and spelling.
